ORLANDO, FL. – Pomona-Pitzer's Angie Zhou advanced to the NCAA Singles National Championship match with her wins in the Quarterfinals and Semifinals on Saturday at the USTA National Campus. Fellow singles player Nina Ye participated as well on Saturday and ended her singles run in the Quarterfinals with a loss.
Semifinals: Angie Zhou def. Sarah Pertsemlidis 6-0, 6-1
Zhou faced off against the MIT No. 1 singles player Sarah Pertsemlidis in the Semifinals of the NCAA Singles Bracket after Pertsemlidis beat Nina Ye in the Quarterfinals earlier in the day. Zhou battled with her opponent in game one but went on to break Pertsemlidis in game on and then went on to add another clean sweep in set one with a 6-0 victory.
Zhou continued to roll early on in set two and went up 5-0 to start but Pertsemlidis was able to get one game back to cut it to 5-1 to hand Zhou just her second lost game of the NCAA Tournament. Zhou got back to her winning ways and finished off Pertsemlidis in the final two games to advance to the NCAA National Championship.
Quarterfinals: Angie Zhou def. Josephine Libby 6-0, 6-1
Zhou went up against Josephine Libby of Rochester in the Quarterfinals of the singles bracket and continued to roll after she breezed through the first set with a clean 6-0 win. In the first game of the second set, Zhou's incredible unbeaten streak came to an end as she suffered her first lost game of the NCAA Tournament snapping a 42-game win streak. Despite opening the second set down 0-1 Zhou rallied and rattled off six-straight wins to take the match 6-0, 6-1 and advance to the Semifinals.
Quarterfinals: Sarah Pertsemlidis def. Nina Ye 6-2, 6-1
Nina Ye faced off against Sarah Pertsemlidis of MIT in her Quarterfinal matchup. Ye split the first two games with the MIT singles opponent but started to fall behind in the first set as Pertsemlidis came away with a 6-2 win. Pertsemlidis continued to push Ye in the second set as Ye ran out of gas during her run in the NCAA Tournament and bowed out in the Elite 8.
