RICHARDSON, TX. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis team advanced through the NCAA Regional after their 5-1 win over Redlands on Sunday morning at the UTD Tennis Courts.
This win over Redlands in the NCAA Regional Final marks the first time the Sagehens have advanced past the NCAA Regionals since 2010 where they advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals.
Pomona-Pitzer started the day with two wins during doubles play to take a 2-1 lead into singles. Marissa Markey and Angie Zhou continued their solid doubles play with a quick 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles followed by a close match at No. 1 doubles with Maria Lyven and Nina Ye edging out an 8-6 win.
Georgia Ryan and Janie Marcus got down early in their match at No. 3 doubles 5-2. The duo battled all the way back to cut it down to one game at 6-5, But Redlands hung on for the win at the No. 3 spot, 8-5.
After taking a 2-1 lead into singles, the Sagehens needed three wins to clinch their way through the Regional Tournament. Zhou continued her fast pace of play in singles competition after she gave the Sagehens a win at No. 2 singles 6-1, 6-1 followed by Marcus at No. 5 singles who came away with a 6-1, 6-2 victory to pull the Sagehens within one point of clinching.
Pomona-Pitzer got the clinch at No. 5 singles after Markey won her first set 6-2 and then swept the second set 6-0 to put the Sagehens through to the Elite 8 of the NCAA Tournament.
