CLAREMONT, CA. – The No. 1 Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team kept their unbeaten conference streak alive with a SCIAC doubleheader win 14-3 over Occidental at home and a 21-8 win against Chapman on the road.
Season Impact: with the wins, the Sagehens move to 16-15 overall and 10-0 in conference play.
Pomona-Pitzer 14, Occidental 3
The Sagehens were led by Katherine Cullen, Lucie Abele, Namlhun Jachung, and Nikki Rubottom who each shared a game-high two goals while Nadia Paquin, Jessy Nesbit, Kaylee Stigar, Lulu Gaither, Allie Wong, and Alexandra Szczerba each chipped in with one goal in the win. Zosia Amberger got the start against the Tigers and picked up the win with nine saves and two steals.
The Sagehen defense, along with Amberger, kept the Tigers off of the scoreboard for the entire first quarter while the Sagehen offense went to work. Pomona-Pitzer scored all five goals of the first as Jachung and Abele each netted two along with Paquin for one to get the Sagehens out to a 5-0 start.
Pomona-Pitzer added two more to start the second to make it seven-straight as Rubottom and Nesbit both found the back of the net before the Tigers scored their first goal of the contest with 6:18 left in the second quarter to make it 7-1. Szczerba and Stigar responded with goals for Pomona-Pitzer before Oxy netted their second goal to make it 9-2 with 3:30 left before halftime. The Sagehens ended the first half on a high note as Gaither netted the 10th goal of the half to take a 10-2 lead into the break.
Each team came out in the third quarter and scored a goal as Cullen scored her first goal of the goal to make it 11-3 while the Sagehens ended the game with three goals in the fourth by Rubottom, Wong and Cullen to end a 14-3 rout over Occidental.
Pomona-Pitzer 21, Chapman 3
The Sagehens were led by Sullivan Wu who netted a game-high five goals in the win. Szczerba finished right behind Sullivan Wu with four goals while Rubottom also netted a hat-trick with three in the win. May Lin got the start in goal and picked up the win with a total of six saves and one steal.
Pomona-Pitzer got out to a quick 5-0 start to open the game after Sullivan Wu, Paquin, Abele, Lewis and Szczerba all got on the board early in the first quarter. Chapman responded with a goal to end the first but still trailed 5-1.
Szczerba kept the scoring going for the Sagehens to open the second, but the Panthers answered with back-to-back goals to make it 6-3. The Sagehens responded with two of their own from Rubottom and Jachung before Chapman ended the first half with a goal, but the Sagehens still led 8-4 at halftime.
Chapman and Pomona-Pitzer alternated goals to start the second half with Sullivan Wu netting her second of the night before the Sagehens went on a 7-1 run to end the third to take a 10-point lead at 16-6 heading into the fourth.
The Panthers started the fourth with the opening goal of the quarter before the Sagehens added three more in a row by Lewis and two from Rubottom to take a 19-7 lead. Chapman added one more to their total while Cullen and Aurora Sheridan capped out a big scoring night for the Sagehens as they stayed unbeaten in SCIAC play.
