CLAREMONT, CA. – The No. 2 Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis team earned another win over a top-25 opponent with an 8-1 win over No. 20 SCIAC foe Redlands on Saturday afternoon at the Pauley Tennis Complex.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 13-1 overall and open up SCIAC play 1-0.
Pomona-Pitzer started the competition with two of the three doubles to get out to a 2-1 lead. Marissa Markey and Angie Zhou earned the win at the No. 1 spot 8-1 while Patria Aziz and Maria Lyven took an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles.
The Sagehens would go on to sweep the singles matches with all six wins. Lyven doubled her wins on the day with a sweep in straight sets at No. 1, 6-0, 6-0. Samantha Moore-Thomson followed with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles while Amelia Poor earned a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 5 and Zhou with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 2.
Pomona-Pitzer went on to win two additional tiebreakers as well at No. 3 and No. 4 singles. Markey dropped her first set 7-5 but came back to take the second set 6-4 and after a tough tiebreaker, earned a 10-8 win.
Georgia Ryan also battled for a three-set win after she also fell in her first set by the score of 6-2 but came back with a big 7-5 win in set two and dominated the tiebreaker for the 10-2 win.
