CLAREMONT, CA. – The No. 1 Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team completed their regular season Sixth Street Rivalry Sweep over No. 2 CMS with a 12-5 win on the road at Axelrod Pool.
Season Impact: with the win, the Sagehens improve to 18-15 overall and stay perfect in SCIAC play at 12-0.
The Sagehens were led by Lucie Abele who netted the only hat-trick of the game with three goals. Allison Sullivan Wu and Namlhun Jachung each netted two goals while Abigail Wiesenthal, Nadia Paquin, Kaylee Stigar, Lulu Gaither and Alexandra Szczerba all had one each in the win.
CMS started out the game with a goal after they took advantage of an early powerplay to go up 1-0. Sullivan Wu responded for the Sagehens, but CMS added another goal on their next possession to take a 2-1 lead with 5:57 left in the first. Pomona-Pitzer went on to score four-straight goals to end the quarter as Abele, Gaither, and Szczerba got on the board to give the Sagehens a 5-2 lead heading into the second.
The defense, along with goalkeeper May Lin, stepped up big for the Sagehens in the second quarter as they kept the Athenas quiet with zero goals in the quarter. Wiesenthal and Stigar netted goals in the second quarter as the Sagehens continued to build their lead with a 7-2 advantage at halftime.
Pomona-Pitzer opened the second half with a powerplay goal from Sullivan Wu to take an 8-2 lead and the defense almost kept CMS shutout for the second-straight quarter, but the Athenas netted a goal with 30 seconds left in the third for their first goal in nearly 21 minutes. The Sagehens went on to net the final goal of the third by Jachung to lead 9-3 heading into the fourth.
CMS outscored the Sagehens 3-2 in the fourth as Abele and Jachung added to their goal total, but the game was already well in hand as the Sagehens left CMS with a big seven-point victory.
