THOUSAND OAKS, CA. – The No. 1 Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team stayed perfect in SCIAC play with their 12-8 win over No. 2 ranked Cal Lutheran on Wednesday afternoon at the Samuelson Aquatics Center.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 14-15 overall and stay perfect at 8-0 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens shared the scoring on offense with four players sharing a team-high two goals. Allison Sullivan Wu, Madison Lewis, Lucie Abele, and Alexandra Szczerba all had two goals in the win while Abigial Wiesenthal, Namlhun Jachung, Lulu Gaither, and Nikki Rubottom each chipped in with one.
Pomona-Pitzer got on top early as Sullivan Wu netted the first goal of the game to give the Sagehens a 1-0 lead inside the first minute. The Sagehens doubled their lead as Lewis netted the next goal but a response from Cal Lutheran made is 2-1 with 4:28 left in the first. The Regals went on to tie the game at 2-2 but the Sagehens took advantage of a powerplay late in the first and a goal by Szczerba made is 3-2 heading into the second.
The Sagehens came out in the second and started to build their lead with three-straight goals to open the second from Lewis, Gaither, and Wiesenthal to take a 6-2 lead. Cal Lutheran got one goal back off of a powerplay goal to make it 6-3, but Rubottom and Jachung netted back-to-back goals to extend the lead to 8-3 heading into halftime.
The Regals started out the second half with a goal, but the Sagehens responded on their next possession with a goal from Abele to put the Sagehens back up by five at 9-4. Szczerba added another goal for the Sagehens to push the lead to 10-4, but the Regals started to chip away at the lead with two-straight goals to bring it to a four-goal game at 10-6 with 7:04 left in the fourth.
Sullivan Wu kept the game out of striking distance with another goal in the fourth, but the Regals answered immediately to keep it at four at 11-7. The dagger goal for the Sagehens came with 3:36 left as Abele found herself on a breakaway opportunity and found the back of the net to put the Sagehens up 12-7 with little time remaining for the Regals to mount a comeback.
