Sagehens Beat Beavers; Fall To CSUN In Saturday Doubleheader

CLAREMONT, CA. The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team won their seventh-straight contest with their 16-5 win over Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent Caltech and fell to non-conference opponent CSUN 11-10 on Saturday.  

Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 13-15 overall.

Pomona-Pitzer 16, Caltech 5

The Sagehens were led by Alexandra Szczerba who tallied four goals in the win. Aurora Sheridan and Kaylee Stigar also tallied hat-tricks with three goals each in the win while Allie Wong netted two and Abigial Wiesenthal, Madison Lewis, Kit Bennett, and Nikki Rubottom each had one. May Lin got the start in goal and picked up the win with a save while her and Zosia Amberger split time with Amberger ending with six saves.

The Sagehens started out the game with the opening five goals with Stigar, Szczerba, Rubottom and Wong getting their first goals of the day to put the Sagehens up 5-0 early.  The Beavers scored their first goal of the game with 2:12 left to play in the first, but the Sagehens ended the quarter with two more from Wiesenthal and Rubottom to take a 7-1 lead after one.

Pomona-Pitzer picked up right where they left off on offense as Sheridan and Lewis extended the lead to 9-1 before Caltech netted their second goal to cut it down to 9-2. The Sagehens and Beavers then alternated goals as Bennett found the back of the net, but the Sagehens ended the first half with another goal by Stigar to take an 11-3 advantage into halftime.

The defense continued to shut down the Beavers in the third as they kept a clean sheet coming out of halftime while the offense continued to put up goals as Szczerba, Sheridan and Wong notched goals to extend the lead to 14-3.

The Sagehens eased off the gas in the fourth quarter as Caltech scored two-straight to make it 14-5, but Pomona-Pitzer ended with back-to-back goals from Sheridan and Stigar to end the game 15-5.

Pomona-Pitzer 10, CSUN 11

The Sagehens Wiesenthal and Namlhun Jachung who shared a team-high with two goals each in the loss while Katherine Cullen, Allison Sullivan Wu, Nadia Paquin, Madison Lewis, Lucie Abele, and Szczerba each had one.

CSUN got the scoring going with a goal inside the first minute of the game before the Sagehens responded with a Paquin goal to even it at 1-1. CSUN took the lead just before the end of the first with a goal to take a 2-1 lead heading into the second. 

The Matadors started the second with three-straight goals to open their largest lead of the first half at 5-1. The Sagehens broke the scoring streak with Lewis and after another Matador goal, Szczerba and Cullen found the back of the net to cut it down to two goals at 6-4.

After the Sagehens got in striking distance, CSUN added two more goals just before halftime to take an 8-4 lead into the break. 

The Sagehens opened the third with a goal from Jachung, but CSUN came back with two-straight to extend the lead to 10-5 to end the third.

Pomona-Pitzer came roaring back in the fourth as they outscored CSUN 5-1 in the quarter. Abele started the scoring for the Sagehens within the first minute and after the Matadors responded with their only goal of the fourth, the Sagehens scored four-straight goals by Sullivan Wu, Wiesenthal, and Jachung to come within one goal at 11-10 with just under a minute to play.  

The Sagehens came up with a big stop on defense as they forced a shot clock violation and after a timeout, drew up a last second play that was saved by the CSUN keeper as the Sagehens' comeback attempt fell just short.
