CLAREMONT, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team captured four wins on the weekend with a Sunday sweep over Caltech 17-6 and La Verne 14-9 on Sunday afternoon.
Season Impact: With the wins, the Sagehens improve to 12-14 overall and 6-0 in SCIAC play.
Pomona-Pitzer 17, Caltech 6
The Sagehens were led by Emilia Zientara and Alexandra Szczerba who both netted a hat-trick with three goals in the win. Nelia Perry, Ellie Montoro, Kit Bennett and Lulu Gaither all had two goals while Katherine Cullen, Nikki Rubottom and Zosia Amberger all chipped in with one. May Lin got the win in goal with one save while Abigail Wiesenthal came in the cage and recorded four saves.
Fresh off of wins against CMS and Whittier, the Sagehens wasted no time building a lead against the Beavers with a 5-0 advantage after goals from Rubottom, Montoro, Bennett and Gaither. The Beavers netted their first goal of the game to make it 5-1 but Bennett made is 6-1 to end the first.
The Sagehens shut out the Beavers in the second quarter while they added four goals to their lead from Zientara, Cullen, Szczerba and Perry to take a 10-1 lead into halftime.
Pomona-Pitzer added more more in the third as Montoro, Zientara, and Szczerba found the back of the net, but the Beavers broke the goal streak with their second in the closing seconds of the third to make it 14-2 going into the fourth.
Caltech put up four goals in the fourth and outscored the Sagehens 4-3 in the final quarter but goals from Amberger, Szczerba, and Perry ended a comfortable win for the Sagehens at home.
Pomona-Pitzer 14, La Verne 9
The Sagehens were led by Nadia Paquin who netted a game-high five goals in the win. Allison Sullivan Wu also netted a hat-trick with three goals while Wiesenthal and Lucie Abele had two and Namlhun Jachung and Szczerba had one. Lin got her second win of the day while her and Amberger split time in goal against the Leopards.
La Verne got out to an early lead with the first goal of the game before the Sagehens ended the first with three-straight goals by Sullivan Wu, Paquin and Sullivan Wu again to take a 3-1 lead. La Verne ended the first with a goal to pull within one at 3-2 to end the first.
The Sagehens and Leopards alternated goals to start the second to give the Sagehens a 4-3 lead until the Sagehens ended the half with back-to-back goals from Abele and Paquin to take a 6-3 lead. La Verne netted two of the next three goals to cut the lead down to 7-5 but the Sagehens ended the first half with a Paquin goal to take an 8-5 lead into halftime.
Pomona-Pitzer opened the second half with two goals from Sullivan Wu and Paquin to double up the Leopards at 10-5. La Verne got on the board but just scored one goal in the third with the Sagehens leading 10-6 heading into the fourth.
Jachung, Abele, and Wiesenthal netted goals for the Sagehens in the fourth as they were able to close out the Leopards and walk away with four wins on the weekend.
