PROVIDENCE, RI – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team ended the Bruno Classic with a 1-4 record after a last second win over La Salle 9-8. The Sagehens fell previously to Brown in overtime, 9-8 and also had losses to Harvard 17-4 and Marist 12-7.
Pomona-Pitzer 9, La Salle 8
The Sagehens were led by Allison Sullivan Wu, Madison Lewis, and Lucie Abele who each netted two goals in the win. Namlhun, Paulina Correa and Kaylee Stigar all had one as while while Jachung netted the game-winner with seconds remaining in the fourth.
The Sagehens got out to a good start as Sullivan Wu netted two goals in the first to give the Sagehens a 2-0 lead at the midway point of the first, but La Salle responded with two goals of their own to end the first to tie the game at 2-2.
Pomona-Pitzer got out to another quick start in the second as Abele, Correa netted goals to take a 5-2 lead. La Salle ended the first half with a score in the last few seconds to cut the lead down to 5-3 heading into the break.
The third period belonged to La Salle as they outscored the Sagehens 4-2. They netted four-straight goals to start the second half and took a 7-5 lead before Lewis and Stigar got the Sagehens on the board to tie the game at 7-7 heading into the fourth.
Both teams went scoreless for the first half of the fourth period, but La Salle took the lead with a goal with 3:28 left to play to take a one-goal lead. The Sagehens responded with a goal to tie on their next possession and after a late turnover by La Salle, had a chance to win the game in the final seconds. The Sagehens emptied their net late in the game to get an extra attacker and at the final seconds of the fourth, Jachung beat the keeper near post to seal the win for the Sagehens.
Pomona-Pitzer 4, Harvard 17
The Sagehens had four different goal scorers in the loss with Sullivan Wu, Paquin, Abele and Szczerba all finding the back of the net.
Pomona-Pitzer stuck with Harvard in the first quarter as they scored three of their four goals in the first but still trailed 4-3. The Sagehens got shutout in the second while Harvard added three more to their total to take a 7-3 lead at halftime. The Sagehens got their final goal of the game in the third while Harvard notched three in the third and seven in the fourth to take the win.
Pomona-Pitzer 8, Brown 9
The Sagehens were led by Lewis and Alexandra Szczerba who each netted a hat-trick in the loss while Jachung had two.
The Sagehens and Bears each netted one in the first as Lewis got her first goal of the game. Brown stayed one goal ahead of Pomona-Pitzer in the second, but the Sagehens matched the Bears through the first half with goals from Jachung and Szczerba in the second quarter to tie the game at 3-3 at halftime.
The Sagehens pulled ahead in the third after a player advantage goal by Jachung but Brown answered with back-to-back goals to take a 5-4 lead heading into the fourth.
Brown took a two-goal lead to start the fourth, but the Sagehens made a comeback with two goals from Szczerba to tie the game at 6-6 to force overtime.
Pomona-Pitzer had a big first overtime as they shutout Brown and jumped ahead by two with goals from Lewis, but the Sagehens got outscored 3-0 in the second overtime period and fell to Brown in the Bruno Classic.
Pomona-Pitzer 7, Marist 12
The Sagehens had seven players score a goal as Sullivan Wu, Nadia Paquin, Abele, Jachung, Kaylee Stigar, Lulu Gaither, and Allie Wong all notched a goal each in the loss.
The Sagehens fell behind early in the first as Marist jumped out to a 3-1 lead. The Sagehens got one back in the final seconds of the first as Jachung scored with six seconds left in the first to trail 3-2
The Sagehens and Marist alternated goals to start the second as Abele made it 4-3, but Marist went on a run with three-straight goals to take a 7-3 heading into halftime.
Marist continued to extend its lead over Pomona-Pitzer with four more to open the third and took an 11-4 lead. The Sagehens added two more goals late in the third by Sullivan Wu and Paquin, but still faced an 11-5 deficit.
Gaither and Wong notched goals in the fourth but the Sagehens couldn't overcome the fourth quarter deficit as they fell to Marist 12-7.
