NEWPORT BEACH, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team ended the Barbara Kalbus Tournament with a 9-6 loss to San Diego State on Sunday afternoon at the Marian Bergeson Aquatics Center.
Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens fall to 5-12 overall.
The Sagehens were led by Lucie Abele who netted two goals in the loss. Allison Sullivan Wu, Nadia Paquin, Namlhun Jachung and Zosia Amberger all each contributed with one goal as well.
San Diego State opened up the game with a goal early in the first quarter to take a 1-0 lead before the Sagehens got their first goal of the game from Abele to tie it at 1-1 with 5:19 left in the first. The Aztecs added one more in the first inside the final two minutes and took a 2-1 lead into the second quarter.
The big difference in the game came in the second as the Aztecs outscored the Sagehens 4-2 in the quarter. The Sagehens tied the game at 2-2 after a Paquin goal but the Aztecs went on to score two-straight to take a 4-2 lead. Jachung cut the lead down to one for the Sagehens for San Diego State ended the half with the final two goals to take a 6-3 lead into halftime.
Abele doubled up on her goals to start the third to bring the Sagehens back to within two, but San Diego State scored back-to-back goals to push the lead back up to four goals at 8-4.
Sullivan Wu gave the Sagehens a little life in the fourth as she opened up with a goal to make it 8-5 but San Diego State held off the Sagehens in the fourth to come away with the win.
