IRVINE, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team fell to 0-3 in the Barbara Kalbus Tournament after a 16-7 loss to Arizona State and a 12-10 loss to Loyola Marymount.
Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens fall to 5-12 overall.
Pomona-Pitzer 7, Arizona State 16
The Sagehens were led by Nadia Paquin and Kathrine Cullen who each netted two goals in the loss while Abigail Wiesenthal, Allison Sullivan Wu and Lulu Gaither each chipped in with one.
The Sagehens got out to a big start in the first quarter as Sullivan Wu got the Sagehens out to a 1-0 lead and then back-to-back goal from Paquin gave the Sagehens a 3-0 lead over No. 9 Arizona State. The Sun Devils started to get their offense going late in the first quarter after two goals inside the final 1:30 cut the lead down to 3-2 but Gaither added another in the final seconds to give the Sagehens a 4-2 lead after the first.
After trailing to the Sagehens after the first, Arizona State came out and outscored Pomona-Pitzer 6-0 in the second quarter. ASU tied it at 4-4 with 5:40 to play and eventually went on to take an 8-4 lead heading into halftime.
The Sun Devils came out in the second half and extended their lead to 11-4 before the Sagehens netted their first and second goal of the third from Cullen to cut the lead down to 11-6 with 2:13 remaining. ASU added one more to end the third and led 12-6 going into the fourth.
Pomona-Pitzer added one more goal in the fourth by Wiesenthal, but the Sun Devils sat on their lead and held on for the win.
Pomona-Pitzer 10, Loyola Marymount 12
The Sagehens were led by Alexandra Szczerba who tallied a hat-trick with three goals in the loss. Lucie Abele, Wiesenthal and Paquin notched two goals each while Madison Lewis chipped in with one.
Pomona-Pitzer again got out to a good start early in the game as Abele netted the first two goals of the match to take a 2-0 lead. LMU came back to tie it at 2-2 but Szczerba scored back-to-back goals and Lewis ended the first with her goal to give the Sagehens a 5-2 lead after the first quarter.
The Sagehens started the second with a goal by Paquin to extend the lead to 6-2 and after an LMU goal Wiesenthal and Szczerba got the lead up to 8-3 with 2:49 left to play in the first half. LMU ended the second quarter with a goal but still trailed 8-4 heading into halftime.
The third quarter was all LMU as the Sagehens got outscored 4-1 in the third. LMU opened the third with three-straight goals before Wiesenthal scored to make it 9-7 but LMU added a goal in the last minute to close the gap to 9-8 heading into the fourth.
LMU tied the game at 9-9 and then took an 11-9 lead as they scored three-straight goals in the fourth. The Sagehens responded with a goal to cut it back down to one at 11-10 but LMU added another goal with 2:25 left to play to take a two-goal lead at 12-10. The Sagehens had two chances late to make a run but turned the ball over as LMU snuck away with the comeback win.
