Box Score CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Basketball team capped off their home regular season with a 76-67 win over CMS on Senior Night at Roberts Pavilion.
Season Impact: with the win, the Sagehens improve to 17-4 overall and 13-2 in SCIAC play, which moves them into first place in the SCIAC with a chance to clinch the Regular Season Championship on Monday.
The Sagehens were led by Matthew Eberle who scored a team-high 16 points in the win while five Sagehens hit double-digit scoring numbers. Brendan Mora tallied a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds, Joe Cookson notched 12, Pete Boyle with 11 and Ty Bergman came off the bench for 12.
The Sagehens had a nice shooting night with 48.1% of their shots falling from the field and an even 50% from three hitting on eight of their 16 attempts. The Sagehens outrebounded the Stags 36-26 and controlled the paint with 32 points to CMS's 24.
Like most Sixth Street Rivalries, the game was close and low scoring for the early stages of the first half while the two teams settled into the game. The Stags controlled the lead early with an 18-16 advantage midway through the first half and stretched that lead to 26-18 with 7:17 left before halftime. The Sagehens rallied and came back to take the lead in the final seconds of the first half as free-throws by Mora and a Peyton Mullarkey layup put the Sagehens on top 36-33 heading into the locker room.
The Sagehens started out the second half with a small lead and maintained it throughout the first eight minutes of the second half until the Stags made a run and took a 48-46 lead with just over 10 minutes to go.
The Sagehens regrouped and quickly took the lead back and then began to pull away with about five minutes remaining in the game. Mora hit a jumper followed by an Eberle and-one to extend the Sagehens' lead to 62-54. The Sagehens ended up with their largest lead of the night after Mora stretched it to 10 on the next possession and the Sagehens were able to close the game out at the line to split the Sixth Street Rivalry series with CMS.
