SAN DIEGO, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team went 1-3 at the Triton Tournament with an 11-8 win over Santa Clara and three losses to Michigan, Loyola Marymount and Marist.
Pomona-Pitzer 2, Michigan 14
The Sagehens had two goal scorers as Katherine Cullen and Namlhun Jachung each netted a goal in the loss.
The Sagehens held Michigan to only two goals in the first period but failed to get on the scoresheet as they trailed 2-0 at the end of the first. Michigan outscored the Sagehens 5-0 in the second to take a 7-0 lead into halftime.
Pomona-Pitzer outscored Michigan in the third period 2-1 as Cullen and Jachung got their goals but the Wolverines ended the game with three in the final quarter to take the win over Pomona-Pitzer.
Pomona-Pitzer 6, Loyola Marymount 10
The Sagehens had six different goal scorers as Abigail Wiesenthal, Katherine Cullen, Madison Lewis, Lucie Abele, Jessy Nesbit, Ellie Montoro, Kaylee Stigar, and Lulu Gaither all got goals in the loss.
The Sagehens fell behind early in the first half against LMU with the Sagehens getting one goal in the first and two in the second but LMU netting three goals in each of the first two periods to take a 6-3 lead at halftime.
Each team netted one goal in the third but LMU capped the game off by outscoring Pomona-Pitzer 3-1 in the fourth to hold off the comeback attempt and get the win.
Pomona-Pitzer 5, Marist 14
The Sagehens were led by Abigail Wiesenthal Who netted two goals in the loss.
Marist jumped out to an early lead with four-straight in the first until Alessandra Wong got the first goal of the game for the Sagehens to trail 4-1 heading into the second.
Pomona-Pitzer had their best scoring period of the game in the second with three goals but Marist matched the Sagehens with three of their own to preserve their first quarter lead.
Marist began to pull away in the third with three goals to open the second half before the Sagehens netted their first goal to make it 10-5. Marist ended the game outscoring the Sagehens 3-0 in the fourth to hand the Sagehens their third loss of the UCSD Tournament.
Pomona-Pitzer 11, Santa Clara 8
The Sagehens were led by Lulu Gaither who had three goals in the win.
Santa Clara got ahead with the first goal of the game, but the Sagehens responded with two goals from Gaither and one from Cullen to take a 3-2 lead. The Sagehens matched Santa Clara with two goals in the second as Wiesenthal and Abele found the back of the net to give the Sagehens a 5-4 lead heading into halftime.
The Sagehens took over the game in the third with five goals. Wong netted two goals in the third while Gaither, Paulina Correa, and Jachung joined in on the scoring to give the Sagehens a big 10-6 lead heading into the fourth.
Weisenthal opened up the fourth with a goal to give the Sagehens their largest lead of the game at 11-6. Santa Clara ended up scoring two more goal in the fourth, but the Sagehens were able to hold off the comeback and ride their big third quarter for the win.
