Sagehens Beat Poets To Set Up Sixth Street Championship

Box Score

CLAREMONT, CA . – The Pomona-Pitzer Football team bounced back with a big 43-12 win over Whittier on Saturday night at Merritt Field.

Season Impact: with the win, the Sagehens improve to 7-2 overall and 4-1 in SCIAC play.  The Sagehens will now host CMS next week with the winner earning the SCIAC Championship and the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

The Sagehens were led by Skylar Noble who completed 17 of his 20 throws for 281 yards and four touchdowns. Dominick Norris led the rushing attack with 45 yards off six carries and Sander Wimmer went over the century mark with 104 yards off of six catches and three touchdowns.

Gus Burns led the Sagehens in tackles with five while Graham Olson, Ben Porter, and Sathya Siddapureddy came away with sacks and Luca Milano and Alexander Wood had interceptions.

Pomona-Pitzer forced a three-and-out on Whittier's first drive of the game and promptly took their first drive 81 yards capped off by a Noble TD to Wimmer to put the Sagehens up 7-0 early in the first quarter.  The Sagehens doubled their lead with the first play of the second quarter as Wimmer and Noble connected again for a four-yard pass to make it 14-0.

Whittier showed some life in the first half after they put together a 14-play drive that resulted in a touchdown but missed the extra point to cut into the lead at 14-6. Pomona-Pitzer went on to add two more touchdowns before halftime as Cole Barry broke loose on a route for a 45-yard touchdown pass from Noble and Noble would go on to run in a five-yard score late in the first half to put the Sagehens up 29-6 at halftime.

It took Pomona-Pitzer just three plays in the second half to score another touchdown as Wimmer completed his hat-trick with his third score of the game off a big 55-yard pass from Noble to push the lead to 36-6.

The Sagehens pulled the starters in the second half but continued to score the ball as Jackson Diaz ran in a 10-yard score after a five-play, 55-yard drive to extend the lead to 43-6.

Whittier ended up with another touchdown in the second half with another 14-play drive that ended up going 99 yards, but the Sagehens cruised to a big win to set up a Sixth Street Rivalry for the SCIAC Championship.

CMS and Pomona-Pitzer have never met at the end of the season to decide the SCIAC Champion and Pomona-Pitzer has never won a SCIAC Championship in its existence as Pomona-Pitzer.  The last Championship Pomona won was in 1955 when Pomona and Claremont were combined for an athletic department.   The two teams will meet on Saturday, November 12th at 1:00 p.m. to decide the Sixth Street Champion, the SCIAC Champion, and the automatic bid into the NCAA tournament.
