Sagehens Fall To Puget Sound 79-77

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Basketball team fell to non-conference opponent Puget Sound 79-77 to end the 2022 David Wells Classic on Saturday night at Roberts Pavilion.

Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens fall to 2-4 overall to start the season.

The Sagehens were led by Brendan Mora who led the team with 16 points and seven rebounds. Joe Cookson and Ty Bergman each added 15 points while Peyton Mullarkey came off the bench with 11 points in the loss.

A very impressive shooting night for both teams in this game with both teams shooting over 50% from both the floor and from three.  The Sagehens converted on 55.6% of their shots from the field and hit on 52% of their threes while Puget Sound hit on 50% of their shots from the floor and 53.3% from three. Pomona-Pitzer outrebounded the Loggers 32-21 and had 30 points in the paint with Puget sound coming away with just 18 down low.  The big difference in the game was the turnover battle that Puget Sound won 18-10 and converted 16 points off of the Sagehens' turnovers.

Pomona-Pitzer jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first half, but it was quickly erased as Puget Sound responded with a 10-2 run to take their first lead of the game at 10-8. The Sagehens jumped ahead again over the Loggers with Puget Sound responding on another run to tie the game at 24-24 with 6:48 left in the first half. The two teams alternated lead changes late in the first half, but a Mullarkey jumper put the Sagehens up 37-36 heading into halftime.

Puget Sound took the lead early coming out of the locker room and maintained a small advantage over the Sagehens throughout the early stages of the second half. Mullarkey put the Sagehens up again just after the midway point of the second half with a made three to make it 62-59 with under 10 minutes to play.  The Loggers and Sagehens alternated leads late in the game and a big three by Puget Sound made it a four-point lead at 79-75 with 1:14 to play. The Sagehens cut it down to two points after a bucket by Bergman and after a big defensive stop, had a chance to tie or win the game with their last possession.  Off an inbound play, Pete Boyle had a good look on a jumper, but the ball rimmed out as the Sagehens fell to Puget Sound by the score of 79-77.
