RIVERSIDE, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team opened up the Lancer Tournament 0-2 after a 10-5 loss to No. 11 UC San Diego and a 14-11 loss to No. 24 California Baptist on Saturday afternoon at the Lancer Aquatics Center.
Season Impact: With the losses, the Sagehens fall to 1-3 on the year.
UC San Diego 11, Pomona-Pitzer 5
The Sagehens had five different goal scorers as Abigail Wiesenthal, Allison Sullivan Wu, Lucie Abele, Namlhun Jachung, and Jessy Nesbit all scored goals in the loss.
The Sagehens struck first with a goal from Sullivan Wu to take a 1-0 lead before the Tritons notched two-straight goals to take a 2-1 lead with 3:42 left in the first. The Sagehens evened the score late in the first as Nesbit scored to tie the game at 2-2 to end the first period.
Abele got the Sagehens the lead in the second, but UCSD scored on their next possession as both teams only scored once to go into halftime tied at 3-3.
The Tritons started to pull away in the second half after they outscored the Sagehens 3-1 in the third and 4-1 in the fourth. UCSD ended the fourth 6-4 and then went on to widen their lead to 7-4 with 7:38 left in the fourth. Wiesenthal scored to bring the deficit down to two goals at 7-5 but the Tritons kept the goals coming late as they ended with the final four goals of the game for the win.
California Baptist 14, Pomona-Pitzer 11
The Sagehens had three players share a game-high two goals as Jachung, Paulina Correa, and Kaylee Stigar all had two goals.
The Sagehens and Lancers both had the offense working in the first half. The Sagehens cored first with a goal by Wiesenthal, but the Lancers came back with three-straight to take a 3-1 lead. Madison Lewis, Correa and Nikki Rubottom finished the first period with goals to tie Cal Baptist 4-4 after the first.
The Lancers slightly outscored the Sagehens in the second period 5-4. The Lancers took a two-goal lead before Sullivan Wu scored the first goal of the second period to take the score 6-5 with 4:47 left before halftime. Nadia Paquin, Correa, and Stigar scored goals to even the score at 8-8 with 1:02 left in the first half, but the Lancer scored late to take a 9-8 lead at the break.
Cal Baptist and Pomona-Pitzer each netted two goals in the third as Jachung and Stigar scored to take a 10-9 lead with 3:03 left in the third, but the Lancers tied it at 10-10 and took the lead at 11-10 with seven seconds remaining to take a one-goal lead heading into the fourth.
The Lancers opened up the fourth with two-straight goals to take a three-goal lead at 13-10 with 5:47 left to play. The Sagehens cut it down to two goals after Jachung found the back of the net, but the Sagehens couldn't come back as they fell to the Lancers 14-11.
