LONG BEACH, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team started out there 2022 season 1-1 after a 21-4 loss to Long Beach State and a 9-7 win against Biola on Sunday afternoon at the Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center.
Long Beach State 21, Pomona-Pitzer 4
The Sagehens had four different goal scorers as Nadia Paquin, Jessy Nesbit, Christiana Marchese and Alexandra Szczerba each netted a goal in the loss.
Long Beach started jumped out to an early lead with the first three goals of the game to take a 3-0 lead before the Sagehens got on the board with a goal from Marchese to make it 3-1 with 51 second left to go in the first. The Beach added one more goal in the first to end the quarter up 4-1.
Long Beach State had a big second quarter as they outscored the Sagehens 9-1. The Sagehens added one more goal in the first half by Szczerba but still trailed 13-2 at the break.
The Beach continued to add to their lead in the third as they won the period 4-0. The Sagehens netted two more goals in the fourth by Nesbit and Paquin, but the Sagehens would ultimately fall in their first game of the season to Long Beach State.
Pomona-Pitzer 9, Biola 7
The Sagehens were led by Allison. Sullivan Wu who led the team with two goals in the win. The Sagehens had seven other goal scorers in the game as Abigial Wiesenthal, Madison Lewis, Lucie Abele, Namlhun Jachung, Marchese, Szczerba and Nikki Rubottom all scored a goal as well for the Sagehens.
Pomona-Pitzer started out with the early lead as Szczerba got the scoring going within the first three minutes of the game. Biola answered with their first goal of the game to tie it at 1-1 and went on to take the lead at 2-1 with under a minute to go as they ended the first with a 2-1 lead.
The Sagehens bounced back in the second on offense while the defense shut out the Eagles in the period. Marchese got the scoring going for the Sagehens around the four-minute mark of the second to tie the game at 2-2 while Sullivan Wu notched her first goal of the game to give the Sagehens a 3-2 before halftime.
Pomona-Pitzer kept the offense rolling in the third and extended its lead to 6-3 after goals from Wiesenthal, Abele and Rubottom with 2:38 left to play In the third quarter. Biola added one more late goal in the third but the Sagehens maintained a 6-4 lead heading into the fourth.
The Sagehens kept the Eagles out of striking distance for the entire fourth quarter as Biola never got within one score of the Sagehens' lead. Jachung and Lewis notched early goals in the fourth to preserve the lead and Sullivan Wu scored her second goal of the game to close it out as the Sagehens ended at 1-1 after their opening weekend of 2022.
