Box Score CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Basketball team fell in their road leg of the Sixth Street Rivalry 57-53 to CMS on Saturday night at Roberts Pavilion.
Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens suffer their first SCIAC loss of the season and fall to 5-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
The Sagehens were led by Brendan Mora and Peyton Mullarkey who each shared a team-high 15 points in the loss. Mora tacked on 14 rebounds as well for his sixth double-double of the season.
Both teams had a tough night from the field with the Sagehens shooting at a 32.7% clip and 24.1% from three while CMS went 33.3% from the field and 28.6% from three. Rebounds were almost dead even with the Sagehens holding a one rebound advantage at 42-41 but the big difference came at the turnover stat with the Sagehens giving the ball up 14 times and CMS only eight.
Like most Sixth Street Rivalries, both teams struggled on offense early in the first half. The Sagehens eventually got out to an early lead in the first half and led 7-2 after a Mora three, but CMS battled back and took their first lead of the game at 11-10 after a pair of made free throws with 10:38 left in the first half.
Pomona-Pitzer earned some 50/50 balls that they transformed into good offense and built a small lead over CMS late in the first half. Matthew Eberle hit a three with 3:07 left in the first half to put Pomona-Pitzer up 24-15 but the Stags had the final points of the first half and closed the gap to 24-22 heading into halftime.
Pomona-Pitzer stayed ahead of CMS for the first five minutes of the second half, but the Stags drew even with the Sagehens at 29-29 and reclaimed their lead at 31-29 with just under 15 minutes left to play.
The Sagehens kept the deficit close, but CMS hit some big shots late in the second half and kept the Sagehens out of striking distance. The Sagehens had opportunities to close the game down to a one possession game but couldn't get the big shot to drop as they came up just short in their away Sixth Street Rivalry.
