Sagehens Top Chapman For First SCIAC Win Of The Season

Box Score

ORANGE, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Basketball team started out its conference season with a 76-62 win over SCIAC opponent Chapman on Wednesday night at the Hutton Sports Center.

Season Impact: with the win, the Sagehens improve to 5-2 overall and open up at 1-0 in the SCIAC this season.

The Sagehens were led by Brendan Mora who went for a team-high 20 points and 12 rebounds in the win for his 5th double-double of the season. Pete Boyle also got into double digits for the Sagehens with 11 points off of a 3-4 clip from downtown and Ty Bergman came off of the bench with 13 points in the win.

The Sagehens had a nice shooting night from beyond the arc as they hit 48% of their three's while going an even 50% from the floor. The defense held chapman to just 36.4% from the floor with the Panthers hitting just 25.9% of their shots from three.

Pomona-Pitzer got ahead and stayed ahead early in the first half.  The Panthers fought back and took their first lead of the game at 16-14 with just under 12 minutes to play in the half but the Sagehens quickly erased that deficit with a Bergman three-pointer and sparked a 13-4 that ended with a Matthew Eberle jumper to give the Sagehens a 29-22 lead with 4:43 left before halftime.  The Panthers came back to cut the lead down to just three points, but the Sagehens added some late offense and a Mora layup at the buzzer gave the Sagehens a 35-28 lead at the break.

It was more of the same for the Sagehens in the second half as they kept their distance from the Panthers early. The Sagehens extended their lead to 10 points at 42-32 within the first five minutes of the half and kept the Panthers out of striking distance for the remainder of the game. Mora led the second half charge with 11 points while strong bench play from Bergman and Peyton Mullarkey allowed the Sagehens to leave Orange with their first SCIAC win of the Season.

Up Next: The Sagehens will next travel to SCIAC Rival CMS on Saturday, December 4th at 5:00 p.m.
