Box Score CLAREMONT, Ca. – The Sagehens men's basketball team fell to the Whitworth Pirates 73-58 after a heavy attack from downtown from the Pirates. With the loss, the Sagehens are now 4-2, having only loss to Division II Biola University and Whitworth, their first Division III loss of the season. Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Wednesday, Dec. 1 when they travel to Chapman at 7:00 p.m.
How It Happened
The Sagehens started the game on an 8-0 run over the course of the opening four minutes and 13 seconds of play. Whitworth bounced back with a 7-2 run, but a Matthew Eberle three-pointer brought the surge to an end, giving the Sagehens a 13-7 lead with 12:08 to play in the half. The Pirates went on an 11-5 run to tie the game at 18-18 with 7:41 to play in the half. Pomona-Pitzer briefly broke the tie with two free throws from Stephen Blomstrom to make it 20-18 but the Pirates closed out the half on a 15-6 run to take a 33-26 lead heading into halftime.
Whitworth tried to set the tone of the second half just 13 seconds in as they took a 10-point lead with a three-pointer, but the Sagehens went on a 15-5 run with three-pointers from Brendan Mora and Matthew Eberle to tie the game at 41-41 with 16:22 to play in the second half. Whitworth regrouped and countered, going on a quick 6-2 run to regain the lead at 47-43. The Pirates continued to extend their lead, working their way to a 20-point lead at 73-53 with 1:18 remaining in the contest. The Sagehens saw a three from Nathan Paik and an end of the game layup from Hayden Moser, but Whitworth claimed the 73-58 victory.
The Sagehens shot 38.9% from the field and 36.0% from downtown while the Pirates were 45.5% from the field and 51.9% from beyond the arc. Brendan Mora led the team with 14 points while Matthew Eberle recorded 13 and Stephen Blomstrom recorded 11.
