Box Score CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Football team capped off its 2021 season with an exclamation point as they defeated SCIAC rival CMS 24-10 in the Sixth Street Rivalry on Saturday afternoon at Zinda Field.
The Sagehens got revenge on the Stags after the two teams met in the first game of the season with the Stags getting the 25-3 victory in their non-conference bout.
The Sagehens flipped the script on the Stags as they stuffed the running attack for CMS only allowing 55 yards of offense on the ground. Evan Flitz led the offense with 92 yards passing with two touchdowns. Flitz also led the rushing attack with 41 yards off of 10 carries and a score on the ground. The receivers split up yards through the air as Quinten Wimmer had 52 yards and a touchdown while Cole Barry had 51 yards.
Briggs Garrison led the defense with 12 total tackles and 0.5 sacks Nate Barewin also had double digit tackles with 11 while Thali Cobb, Nicholas DelBiaggio, Graham Olson, Will Thompson and Mark Carling all got into the sack column and Nick Pacult came away with the only interception for the Sagehens.
Pomona-Pitzer stuffed the first drive of the game for CMS and responded with a an eight-play 58-yard drive capped off by a touchdown from Flitz to Will Radice to take a 7-0 lead. CMS got their offense going but the Sagehens stalled out the Stag's drive and forced a punt that took the Sagehens down to the one-yard line. Pomona-Pitzer drove the length of the field in a dominant 14-play drive that ended with Flitz scampering into the end zone to put the Sagehens up 14-0 with 9:44 left in the first half.
With the Stags still trying to figure out their offense, the Sagehens' special teams came up big as Thomas McConnell blocked a punt that gave the Sagehens prime field position at the CMS 40-yard line. Pomona-Pitzer took advantage of their momentum and Flitz found Wimmer on an out route in the endzone to push the lead to 21-0.
With time running out in the first half, the Stags finally got on the board with four seconds left in the half to stay in the game, but the Sagehens went into halftime with a commanding 21-7 lead.
With the Sagehens getting the ball at half, Pomona-Pitzer continued to put points on the board as they got into good field position and Kyler Parris nailed a 36-yard field goal to extend the lead to 24-7.
The Sagehen defense didn't give an inch in the second half as the Stag's offense couldn't get anything going on Pomona-Pitzer. The Sagehens forced three three-and-outs in the second half and on CMS's longest drive of the second half, the Sagehens forced a fumble by Vaish Siddapureddy with Garrett Pittman on the recovery to kill any momentum going the Stag's way.
CMS did manage to put three points on the board with a made field goal in the fourth, but the Sagehens were in no danger of giving up their lead as they rushed Zinda Field for the Sixth Street Rivalry win.
