Pomona-Pitzer Splits In Day Two Of Convergence Tournament

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team split in day two of the Claremont Convergence Tournament with a 14-4 win over Penn State Behrend and an 18-12 loss against Cal Baptist on Saturday afternoon at Haldeman Pool. With the split, the Sagehens move to 7-8 overall

The Sagehens were led by Lucie Abele who tallied a career-high six goals in the win. Madison Lewis also notched a hat-trick with three goals.

The Sagehens had their offense working well in the first quarter of the match with seven goals in the opening eight minutes. Madison Lewis started off the scoring for the Sagehens and then two goals from Abele, one of which of the five-meter variety, put the Sagehens up 3-0 with 3:43 left to play in the first. Paulina Correa and Lewis added goals while Abele ended the first with back to back goals to bring her total to four for the first quarter to give the Sagehens a 7-0 cushion to play with.

Abele picked up right where she left off and scored the opening goal of the second quarter before Nadia Paquin and Katherine Cullen added goals before halftime to extend the Sagehen lead to 10-0 at the break.

Isabel Natalia Wiesenthal opened up the second half with a goal for Pomona-Pitzer before the Lions scored their first goal of the game with 4:10 left in the third. The Sagehens answered with a goal from Lewis to complete her hat-trick for the game and Abele added her sixth late in the third as the Sagehens took a 13-2 lead into the fourth.

Penn State Behrend outscored the Sagehens 2-1 in the final quarter of play with Jessie Nesbit getting on the score sheet off of an assist from Paquin as Pomona-Pitzer cruised to a win in game one of day two of the Claremont Convergence Tournament.

The Sagehens were led by Allison Sullivan Wu and Paquin who each netted a hat-trick with three goals each in the loss.

The Lancers jumped out to a big lead in the first quarter as they outscored the Sagehens 7-3.  The Sagehens jumped out in front with the first goal of the game from Correa before Cal Baptist went on a 5-0 run to take a 5-1 lead.  The Sagehens answered with two of the final three goals of the quarter from Abele and Sullivan Wu but the Sagehens still faced a 7-3 hole heading into the second quarter.

The Sagehens kept it close in the third but still were outscored by one with Cal Baptist coming away with four goals to the Sagehens' three. CBU and Pomona-Pitzer alternated goals to start the second as Correa converted a five-meter penalty and Paquin netted her first goal of the game. CBU then went on to score the next three goals before the Sagehens got the last goal of the half from Paquin but still trailed the Lancers 11-6.

CBU opened the second half with two-straight goals to take a 13-6 lead but the Sagehens responded with two-straight of their own from Paquin and Correa. Each team netted one more goal late as Nesbit ended the third with a goal to bring the deficit to 14-9 heading into the fourth.

The Sagehens scored two of the first three goals of the fourth from Correa and Sullivan Wu to get within striking distance at 15-11, but the Lancers answered back with three-straight goals to put the game away and end any chance of a comeback.

The Sagehens will next return to SCIAC play as they travel to Cal Lutheran on Saturday, March 14th at 11:00 a.m.
