Sagehens Go 2-1 In Opening Day Of Claremont Convergence Tournament

 CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team came away with two wins during day one of the 202 Claremont Convergence Tournament on Friday at Haldeman Pool.

The Sagehens went 2-1 on the day with a 12-9 win over St. Francis, a 17-2 win over Caltech and a 17-7 loss to UC Santa Barbara.  The Sagehens move to 6-7 overall after day one of the Claremont Convergence Tournament.

The Sagehens were led by Allison Sullivan Wu who tallied a hat-trick in game one with four goals in the win.  Madison Lewis, Lucie Abele, Nadia Paquin and Katherine Cullen all put out multi-goals games with two apiece for the Sagehens.

Pomona-Pitzer had its offense working at the beginning and end of the game against the Red Flashes as they tallied eight of their 12 goals in the first and fourth periods.  The Sagehens got their offense going early in the first with a quick powerplay goal from Lewis to take a 1-0 lead.  St. Francis responded with a powerplay goal of their own and went on to alternate goals with the Sagehens as Sullivan Wu scored her first of the game to move the score to 2-2. The Sagehens ended the first with back to back goals from Abele and Cullen to take a 4-2 lead heading into the second.

Pomona-Pitzer stretched their lead to three goals after opening the second with a goal from Lewis but St. Francis came back with two goals to end the second quarter to trim the lead to 5-4 at halftime.

The Red Flashes got back into the game during the third period as they outscored the Sagehns 4-3, the only quarter in which the Sagehens were outscored.  The two teams alternated goals throughout the third quarter as Cullen, Paquin and Sullivan Wu all found the back of the net, but St. Francis was able to draw even with the final goal of the third to take an 8-8 tie into the fourth.

The Sagehens controlled play during the fourth quarter after a powerplay goal to start he quarter as Jessie Nesbit found Sullivan Wu for the goal to reclaim the lead at 9-8. St. Francis responded on their next possession with a goal but the Sagehens closed out game one strong with three-straight scores from Paquin, Sullivan Wu and Abele to hold on for the win in game one of the Claremont Convergence Tournament.

Pomona-Pitzer 17- Caltech 2

The Sagehens were led by Isabel Natalia Wiesenthal and Paulina Correa who each shared a team-high four goals in the win.  Also tallying a hat-trick was Lucie Abele who netted three goals as well.

The Sagehens exploded out of the gate in game two of the tournament with seven goals in the first quarter alone.  Correa got the scoring going with three goals in the first quarter as well as two goals from Abele and one each from Madison Lewis and Wiesenthal to take a strong 7-0 lead after one quarter of play.  The Sagehens shut out the Beavers in the first half and added two more goals in the second from Abele and Paquin to take a 9-0 lead into halftime. 

The Sagehens added six more goals in the third to blow the game wide open at 15-0. Correa started the second half with a goal followed by Jessie Nesbit to take an 11-0 lead. Wiesenthal added two-straight goals and Lewis and Sullivan Wu jumped on the goal parade as well to bring the score to 15-0. 

The Beavers score two goals in the fourth quarter but the Sagehens matched them with two of their own from Nesbit and Wiesenthal as the Sagehens moved to 2-0 on the day in the Convergence Tournament.

Pomona-Pitzer 7, UC Santa Barbara 17

The Sagehens were led by Sullivan Wu and Correa who each tallied a hat-trick with three goals apiece in the loss.

After playing two games already during the day, the Sagehens had struggles getting going on offense early on against the Gauchos. Santa Barbara controlled the first half and outscored the Sagehens 6-0 in the first quarter.  UCSB got its lead up to 10-0 before Pomona-Pitzer netted their first goal with Sullivan Wu finding the back of the net with just under four minutes to play in the first half.

The Sagehens went on to outscore Santa Barbara in the second half 6-5.  Pomona-Pitzer netted two goals in the third from Correa and then outscored the Gauchos 4-2 in the fourth as Sullivan Wu, Correa and Katherine Cullen tallied goals, but the strong start by UCSB propelled them to the victory in the closing game of day one.

The Sagehens will continue the Claremont Convergence Tournament tomorrow with Penn State Behrend at 11:30 a.m. and Cal Baptist at 3:15 p.m.
