Sagehens Open SCIAC Play With 14-9 Win Over Redlands

REDLANDS, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team opened up SCIAC play with a 14-9 win over Redlands on Saturday morning.With the win, the Sagehens improve to 3-6 overall and 1-0 in SCIAC play.

The Sagehens were led by Madison Lewis who led all scorers with four goals in the win. Two more Sagehens earned hat-tricks in the win with Lucie Abele and Jessie Nesbit scoring three goals apiece. Haley Crabtree earned the win for the Sagehens in goal with nine saves.

The Sagehens took the first lead of the game as Nadia Paquin found the back of the net off of a powerplay to take a 1-0 lead.  Redlands responded with back to back goals off of powerplays to take a 2-1 lead before the Sagehens answered with a goal from Allison Sullivan Wu to tie the game at 2-2. Each team scored one more to end the first as Abele netted her first goal of the game to end the first period with Redlands and Pomona-Pitzer all tied up at 3-3.

The Sagehens and Bulldogs alternated goals to start the second quarter with Lewis getting her first goal of the game and after Redlands took a 5-4 lead, the Sagehens ended the first half with two goals from Abele and Lewis to take a 6-5 lead heading into halftime.

The Sagehens continued their string of three-goal quarters into the third as they outscored Redlands 3-2 in the quarter. Nesbit struck first in the second half for the Sagehens followed by goals from Lewis and Nesbit again to take a 9-5 lead with 3:53 left in the third. Redlands battled back with two goals to end the third quarter but Pomona-Pitzer still held a 9-7 lead heading into the fourth.

The Sagehens went on to break the game open to start the fourth with three-straight goals from Paulina Correa, Lewis and Abele to extend the lead to 12-7. The Sagehens went on to add goals from Isabel Natalia Wiesenthal and Nesbit as the Sagehens outscored Redlands 5-2 in the fourth and came away with the 14-9 victory.

The Sagehens will next host SCIAC rival CMS on Wednesday, March 4th at 7:00 p.m.
