Box Score CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Basketball team earned their second-straight Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championship with their 87-66 win over Redlands on Saturday night at Voelkel Gymnasium.
The Sagehens haven't won consecutive SCIAC Championships since the 2004-05 seasons before the inception of the SCIAC Postseason Tournament. This marks the first time in program history that the Sagehens have won both the regular season and postseason tournament title in back to back years in program history.
Fresh off of his career scoring record night, senior Micah Elan was named Tournament MVP and led the Sagehens with 22 points, six assists and five rebounds. Senior Adam Rees turned out a big performance with 18 points, seven rebounds and six assists, junior Alex Preston came away with 13 points and seven assist while senior Jack Boyle chipped in with 10 points and eight rebounds in the win.
The Sagehens have played exceptional defense in the postseason tournament and continued that run of form tonight as the Bulldogs scored only two points through the first seven minutes of action. The Sagehens had the long ball working in the first half as they shot 43.5% from three to go along with 45.9% from the floor. The Sagehens also did a great job of taking care of the ball with just two turnovers in the first half while their counterpart turned the ball over seven times and shot just 28.1% in the first half.
The Sagehens jumped out to an early 15-2 lead to start the game and quickly stretched their lead to 20 points at 29-9 with 8:36 left in the half after a made three by senior James Kelbert. Redlands tried to play catch up ball towards the end of the first half but the Sagehens hit a running jumper by Elan to end the half with the largest lead of the half at 46-25.
Despite building such a large lead in the first half, the Sagehens came out and continued to push the offense against the Bulldogs. Pomona-Pitzer went on to take their largest lead of the game within the first three minutes of the second half after a Boyle three extended the lead to 27 points at 56-29.
The Bulldogs tried to chip away at the Sagehens' lead and got the deficit down to 14 points at 75-61 with 5:07 left to play but the Bulldogs were no match for the Sagehens tonight as Pomona-Pitzer was crowned the 2020 SCIAC Champions.
The Sagehens will next await their opponent in the upcoming NCAA Tournament.
