RIVERSIDE, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team started off their 2020 season with a 14-9 loss to No. 16 Loyola Marymount and a 17-7 loss to No. 8 UC San Diego on Saturday morning at the Lancer Aquatics Center.
Season Impact: With the losses, the Sagehens start the year 0-2 in the Lancer Joust Tournament.
Loyola Marymount 14, Pomona-Pitzer 9
The Sagehens were led by sophomore Allison Sullivan Wu who notched her first hat-trick of the year in her first game with four goals in the loss.
The Sagehens got behind early as LMU struck with the first goal of the day in the first 15 seconds of the first quarter. LMU got another goal on a five-meter penalty to take a 2-0 lead before the Sagehens struck with their first goal of the day from Sullivan Wu with 5:44 left in the first.
LMU tallied two more goals to follow before the Sagehens scored their second goal of the first with just 14 seconds left as first-year Aurora Sheridan opened up her collegiate goal account to cut the lead down to 4-2 heading into the second quarter.
Each team scored four goals in the second with the Sagehens riding their momentum to open the quarter with two-straight from Sullivan Wu and first-year Isabella Phillips to even the score at 4-4. After giving up three-straight goals from the Sagehens going back to the end of the first quarter, LMU closed out the half with back-to-back scores to go up 6-4 at halftime.
LMU opened up the second half with a goal before the Sagehens countered with a goal from Sullivan Wu and a five-meter penalty from first-year Paulina Correa to keep it close at 7-6.
LMU began to break away from the midway point of the third quarter into the fourth as they outscored the Sagehens 6-1 during that stretch of time. LMU notched three-straight goals until Sullivan Wu got her fourth of the game with 36 second left in the third. The Lions went on to add three more goals in a row to open up the fourth quarter and extended the lead to 13-7.
Pomona-Pitzer ended the game with goals from sophomore Lucie Abele and Correa but couldn't make up ground from the big LMU run as they fell in game one of the Lancer Joust Tournament.
UCSD 17, Pomona-Pitzer 7
The Sagehens were led by Abele who tallied a hat-trick with three goals in the loss.
The Sagehens got out to a slow start against the No. 8 Tritons. UCSD struck first inside the first 30 seconds of the match and the Sagehens answered with a goal by Correa, but it was their only goal of the first quarter. The Tritons went on to score three more goals in the first and took a 4-1 lead heading into the second.
The second quarter was a mirror image of the first in terms of order of goals scored. The Tritons opened up the quarter with a goal followed by an answer from the Sagehens by Abele, but UCSD finished the first half with three unanswered goals to take an 8-2 lead at halftime.
The Tritons opened up their lead in the third quarter after they outscored the Sagehens 6-1 in the third. The Tritons started out with two goals to open the third before Sheridan notched her first goal of the game for the Sagehens. UCSD went on to score seven-straight goals between the middle of the third and the beginning of the fourth quarter to extend their lead to 17-3. Pomona-Pitzer ended the game on a high note as they scored the final four goals of the match from Phillips. Sheridan and two more from Abele as the Sagehens fell to 0-2 in the Lancer Joust.
