Women's Water Polo: Sagehens Cap Off Second Consecutive Perfect SCIAC Season With 8-5 Win Over CMS

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team capped off their second consecutive undefeated conference season with an 8-5 win over CMS on Saturday afternoon at Axelrood Pool.

Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens finished the 2019 regular season unbeaten in conference place with a perfect 14-0 record. This win marks the second-straight season the Sagehens have gone through the SCIAC without a loss and marks the 35th consecutive regular season conference win with the last loss at Whittier on March 25th 2017.

The Sagehens were led by three players with multi-goal games as Anna Yu, Kahea Kahaulelio and Allison Sullivan Wu all had two goals in the win. Morgan Stockham earned the win in goal for the Sagehens as she tallied seven saves and three steals.

Pomona-Pitzer got out to a good start on offense as they put up three goals in the first period. Yu started out the game with a goal followed by a goal by the Athenas to tie the game at 1-1. CMS and Pomona-Pitzer then alternated goals to end the first as Kahaulelio netted her first goal and Bella Villa ended the first with a goal with 14 seconds remaining to give the Sagehens a 3-2 lead after the first period of play. The defense showed up in the second period for both teams as neither team could find a goal as they went into halftime with the Sagehens up 3-2.

The Sagehens came out in the second half and had their way with the Athenas on offense and defense. Pomona-Pizer was able to net three goals in the third while the defense shut down the CMS offense for the second-straight period.  Sulivan Wu netted two goals in the third while Nadia Paquin scored as well to push the lead to 6-2.

CMS started chip into the lead as they came out in the fourth and netted three of the first four goals of the period to trim the lead down to 7-5, but Yu netted a goal with 1:47 left to play to silence any chance of a comeback as the Sagehens finished off the Athenas and capped off yet another perfect conference season.
