Women's Water Polo: Offense Throttles Occidental In Lopsided Victory

EAGLE ROCK, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo Team continues to roll after taking down the Occidental Tigers in their first SCIAC match 21-6 on Wednesday night. Four different Sagehens earned a hat trick, including Anna Yu, Janelle Lewis, Nohea Kahaulelio, and Nadia Paquin, while Kahea Kahaulelio had four assists. It was the fifth straight victory for the Sagehens.

Season Impact: The Sagehens improve their overall record to 5-5 while going 1-0 in the SCIAC.

Anna Yu helped the Sagehens take the early lead after scoring on a power play in the opening 30 seconds. Later, Natalie Hill forced a turnover and found Lewis who then scored to double the lead with 4:23 left. With 3:06 remaining in the period first year Jessie Nesbit found Katherine Cullen for a goal to make it 3-1. The Sagehens led 3-2 after the first.

With a 5-4 lead and 2:12 remaining in the second period, the Sagehens finally broke out with a huge offensive run, scoring three straight goals. Samantha Martinez got the party started with a goal off an assist by Allison Wu. Cullen found her second goal with 1:43 left, and Nohea converted a penalty before halftime to make it 8-4.

Kahea opened up the scoring in the second half, finding the back of the net less than 30 seconds into the first period, and Natalie Hill scored after off a long pass by Morgan Stockham. Paquin followed with a power play goal to make it 11-4. The Sagehens continued to reel, adding two more to cap a 5-0 run. After the Tigers took one back with 3:29 left in the third period, the Sagehens erupted with three straight goals to put the game seemingly out of reach.

In the start of the final period, Lewis and Paquin each scored within the opening minute to make it 18-6. The Sagehens shut out the Tigers for the remainder of the game to hold onto a comfortable victory.

Up Next: The Sagehens will next face Azusa Pacific and UC Irvine at home on March 1 as they host the Claremont Convergence. They will play against the Cougars at 1:45 p.m. followed by a 6:45 p.m. match with the Anteaters.
