Women's Water Polo: Sagehens Come Up Short Against No. 19 UCSD, 7-5

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team fell on the road to No. 19 UC San Diego 7-5 on Saturday afternoon at the Canyonview Aquatic Center.  

Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens drop to 12-18 overall and the Tritons improve to 16-14 overall.

The Sagehens had five players each scored one goal each as senior Hope Grant, sophomore Kahea Kahaulelio, senior Christina Williamson, sophomore Nohea Kahaulelio and freshman Bella Villa all found the back of the net.

The Tritons were led by Lauren Boyer and Krista Schneider who each shared a game-high two goals in the win.

The Sagehens started out on top as Williamson got the scoring going as she scored a goal with 5:03 left in the first. UCSD answered late in the first quarter as Connie Wu scored the first goal of the game for the Tritons with just 33 seconds left on the clock to tie the game at 1-1.

Pomona-Pitzer scored two early goals in the second as Kahea Kahaulelio scored off of an assist from Villa and then Villa came back with a goal of her own off of an assist from sophomore Kyla Pickell to give the Sagehens a 3-1 lead.

The Tritons added one more before the half as Alexis Wieseler netted a goal with 5:29 left in the quarter but the Sagehens held on to keep a 3-2 advantage at halftime.

UCSD took over in the third quarter as they outscored Pomona-Pitzer 4-1. The Tritons began the half with three-straight goals until Grant scored a goal for the Sagehens with 2:52 left in the third. The Tritons added one more to end the quarter as Lauren Boyer capitalized on a five meter penalty shot to give UCSD a 6-4 lead heading into the fourth.

The Tritons took their largest lead of the afternoon at 7-4 after Schneider netted her second goal of the game with 4:26 to go but the Sagehens answered just a minute later as Nohea Kahaulelio scored for the Sagehens off of an assist from sophomore Natalie Hill to cut the lead back down to two goals at 7-5.

Pomona-Pitzer could not make up the two-goal deficit with just three minutes remaining as the Tritons held off the Sagehens in the fourth quarter to earn the win.
