Baseball: Sagehens Win Third Straight With 8-3 Win Over Wesleyan (Conn.)

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team defeated Wesleyan (Conn.) 8-3 for the second-straight day in the California Classic on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field.

Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens have won their third-straight game and improve to 8-11 overall while Wesleyan falls to 5-2.

The Sagehens were led by senior Tanner Nishioka who went 2-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Junior Bryce Rogan, junior Cade Hulse, freshman Nolan McCafferty and freshman Tyler Yoshihara each collected two hits as well in the win.

Freshman Jeremy Jess got the win for the Sagehens, his third of the year, as he went 6.2 innings gave up three runs on five hits and tallied four strikeouts.

The Cardinals were led by Andrew Keith who went 3-4 with a run scored in the loss.

The Sagehens got on the board first in the bottom of the third inning after a wild pitch led to the Sagehens getting their first run of the game as Hulse came in to score to give Pomona-Pitzer a 1-0 lead.

Pomona-Pitzer extended that lead in the bottom of the sixth as Nishioka banked a triple off of the center field wall that drove in freshman Jeremiah Quezada and junior Adam Hinthorne to push the Sagehens' lead to 3-0. Rogan followed that up with a RBI single to bring home Nishioka to extend the lead to 4-0.

The Cardinals threatened the Sagehens' lead in the top of the seventh as Earle blasted a three-run homer to center field as Wesleyan quickly cut down the Pomona-Pitzer lead to just one run at 4-3.

The Sagehens tacked on another run in the bottom of the seventh as Quezada drove home Yoshihara and then blew the game open in the bottom of the eighth as they scored three more runs off of a RBI single from Hulse and senior Kevin Jordan brought home two more on a double to left center as the Sagehens pulled away from the Cardinals.

Yoshihara came in for the Sagehens in the ninth as he faced only three batters setting two of them down on strikes to give the Sagehens their third-straight win.
