LOS ANGELES, CA — Calvin Aylward set one of the nation's best marks in the javelin, Paul Messana posted the nation's best mark in the 800 meter, and Andy Reischling ran one of the best times in Pomona-Pitzer history in the 5000 meter Friday afternoon at the Occidental Distance Carnival and Sprint Fest.
The annual meet at Occidental College features a mix of athletes from four-year colleges and universities across all divisions, junior colleges, and unattached runners.
Aylward set the best mark at the meet and the second best mark in the nation this year with his throw of 211-09. Aylward's throw also places him atop the Sagehens' all-time list, breaking Mark Merlino's record of 206-3 set in 1988.
Messana's time of 1:52.08 in the 800 meter is the fastest in NCAA Division III this season. The senior currently holds the second fastest time in Sagehen history with a time of 1:49.86.
Reischling finished with a time of 14:29.25 in the 5000 meter, moving the sophomore to number four on the Sagehens all-time list in the event.
Nick Vucovich, who held the fastest time in the 800 meter prior to today's meet, finished with a time of 1:55.50 in the event, the third fastest time among DIII competitors. Gabe Elliott ran a personal best in the event with a time of 1:56.46.
Peter Davis set a season best mark in the 1500 meter with a time of 4:02.24. Nicholas Borowsky ran the fastest time in the event for Pomona-Pitzer at 4:00.46.
Faraaz Rashidi won his heat in the 100 meter with a lifetime best mark of 11.12. His time places him at ninth all-time in the Pomona-Pitzer record books.
Christopher Neikirk ran the fastest time among DIII runners and second fastest of the day in the 110 hurdles at 14.93. He also finished with a time of 51.00 in the 400 meter. Lucas White Moon ran 53.42 in the 400 meter.
White Moon finished with a distance of 19-07.50 in the long jump and 43-00.25 in the triple jump.
Parker Head ran the fastest DIII time of the meet in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:25.21. Julian DeGroot-Lutzner finished next at 9:34.10.
Reggie Reed finished second among Division III competitors in the shot put and discus. In the shot put he finished with a distance of 44-07.00, and finished at 130-03 in the discus.
Next Meet: The Sagehens have a two week layoff and then compete next on March 25 at the Westmont Collegiate Classic in Santa Barbara beginning at 10:30 a.m.
