Box Score CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Basketball team fell in the Semifinals of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Tournament to conference rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 70-64 on Friday night at Roberts Pavilion.
Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens drop to 14-12 overall as they end their season with a loss in the SCIAC Semifinals. CMS Improves to 21-4 overall and will face off against Cal Lutheran in the SCIAC Finals on Saturday.
The Sagehens were led by freshman Adam Rees who had a career-high 16 points off of the bench. Also in double digits for the Sagehens was freshman James Kelbert with 11, senior Mitchell Finkel with 11 and freshman Micah Elan with 10.
The Stags were led by Kendrick Morris who had a game-high 17 points for the Stags. Miles President, Riley Hall and Michael Scarlett each chipped in with 11 points each.
The Sagehens and Stags came out for their third Sixth Street Rivalry of the year after the teams split during the regular season with each team winning on the opposing team's home court.
The opening half started out with the two teams staying even as a nervous first five minutes led to a 4-4 tie at the first media timeout with 14:57 left until halftime.
After the media timeout, the Sagehens' offense got rolling as they sparked a 22-4 run to take a 26-8 lead after a three pointer by Reese with 6:08 left in the first half.
After the Sagehens' run, the Stags came back with a run of their own as they answered with a 15-2 run to cut the lead all the way down to just 28-23 with 1:45 left on the clock.
After a very entertaining first half with two huge runs made by both teams, the Sagehens had the upper hand with a 32-27 lead at the half.
The Stags came out in the second half and looked to erase the Sagehen lead early on as CMS started the half converting on a few early chances and cut the lead down to a one possession game at 36-33.
CMS stayed within striking distance throughout the entire second half and eventually tied the game up at 50-50 with 7:45 remaining.
The Stags then took their first lead of the game at 53-51 just two possessions later after Evan Davis hit a three with 6:51 left on the clock.
The lead changed hands multiple times through the final six minutes of the game but the Stags held a slight three-point lead at 65-62 with under two minutes to play.
The Stags put the game out of reach as Kendrick Morris came up with a big rebound off of a missed layup by Scarlett and put back the tip in to almost certainly seal the game for CMS.
The Sagehens were unable to come up with a big shot late in the game as the Stags got the better of the Sagehens in the Semifinals of the SCIAC Tournament.
