Men's Basketball: Redlands Defeats Sagehens On Senior Night, 87-75

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Basketball team fell to Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Redlands 87-75 on Tuesday night at Voelkel Gymnasium.

Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens drop to 14-11 overall and 10-6 in SCIAC play while Redlands finishes its season on a high note and improved to 8-17 overall and 4-12 in conference play.

The Sagehens were led by sophomore Corbin Koch who had a team-high 15 points and freshman Micah Elan chipped in with 13 points and six assists.

The Bulldogs were led by Joey Sponheim who had a game-high 26 points and was 9-11 from the field and 5-7 from three. Sean Milligan tallied 19 points, Blake O'Brien has 12 and Trevor Baker had 11.

The Sagehens jumped out on top in the first half as they built an early 16-8 lead until the Bulldogs burned their first timeout of the half with 14:52 to go.

After the timeout, Redlands went on a 9-0 run and took its first lead of the game at 17-16 with just over ten minutes to play until halftime.

The Bulldogs were on fire from three in the second half as they went 11-16 from three-point range in the first half and shot over 50% from the field.

After Redlands held a 26-25 lead with 5:04 left in the half, the Bulldogs sparked an 18-7 run to close out the half and held a 44-32 lead heading into the locker room.   

The Bulldogs stayed hot from the field to start the second half but the Sagehens slowly began to chip away at the Redlands' lead. The Sagehens cut the lead down to 59-56 with 10:49 remaining after a three pointer by Koch.

Every time the Sagehens got within striking distance the Bulldogs answered with a big basket to keep the Sagehens from taking over the lead.

The Sagehens' offense couldn't keep up with the Bulldogs in the second half as Redlands ended up shooting 50% for the game and 53% from beyond the arc and handed the Sagehens their second-straight loss to close out the regular season.

Up Next: The Sagehens will enter the SCIAC Tournament as the No. 4 seed and will take on SCIAC rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in round one at Roberts Pavilion on Friday, February 25th at 7:00 p.m.
