LA VERNE, Calif. – The Pomona-Pitzer women's water polo team defeated Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent La Verne 8-5 in overtime on Saturday afternoon at Las Flores Pool and lost to Long Beach State 18-4 on Saturday night at the Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center.
La Verne came into today's match with a 5-0 SCIAC record and in sole possession of first place.
The Sagehens struck first as junior Christina Williamson found the back of the net for her first goal of the game to put Pomona-Pitzer on top 1-0.
The Leopards came back late in the first quarter with a goal of their own to tie the game at 1-1 going into the second quarter.
La Verne jumped on top in second as they outscored the Sagehens 2-1 in the quarter. Senior Megan Snow scored the lone goal of the quarter for Pomona-Pitzer as the Sagehens went into the half with a 3-2 deficit.
The Leopards were shut out in the third quarter and the Sagehens took advantage with two goals from freshman Anna Yu to take a 4-3 lead entering the fourth quarter.
La Verne scored two-straight goals to reclaim the lead at 5-4 but Williamson netted her second goal of the game to tie the match at 5-5 and eventually forced overtime.
Pomona-Pitzer played sound defense in the overtime period as they shut down the Leopards offense and goals from sophomore Jocelyn Castro, Williamson and sophomore Morgan McCracken helped Pomona-Pitzer claim their fifth conference win of the season.
The Sagehens then traveled to No. 17 Long Beach State later in the evening.
The 49ers started out with a 10-0 run to open up the game until the Sagehens got on the board in the second quarter with a goal from Freshman Natalie Hill.
Pomona-Pitzer scored its second goal of the game early in the third quarter as Williamson found the back of the net to make the score 12-2.
The Sagehens tacked on two more in the fourth quarter with goals from Castro and Hill as the Sagehens fell to Long Beach State.
The Sagehens next host SCIAC rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Wednesday, April 13th at 7:00 p.m. at Haldeman Pool.
