CLAREMONT, Calif. -- The Pomona-Pitzer women's water polo team finished day one of the 2016 Convergence Tournament with a 0-2 record after a loss in game one against UC Irvine 14-2 and a loss in their second game against Sonoma State 7-5.
The Sagehens struggled to find the back of the net early as Pomona-Pitzer was shut out in the first half.
UC Irvine was able to find its offense early as the Anteaters tallied four goals by four different players in the first quarter to take a 4-0 lead. UC Irvine added two more goals in the second quarter as they went into halftime with a 6-0 lead.
The Sagehens found their first goal in the third quarter as freshman Kyla Pickell scored her first goal of the day to cut the lead down to 6-1.
The Anteaters responded with five goals in the third quarter to take an 11-1 lead going into the fourth.
Pomona-Pitzer added one more in the fourth as sophomore Jocelyn Castro found the back of the net for the Sagehens but UC Irvine was able to hold on for the win.
The Sagehens went up against CSU Sonoma in the final game of day one of the Convergence Tournament.
The Sagehens went up by two goals in the first quarter as sophomore Morgan McCracken found the net twice early in the game as Pomona-Pitzer took a 2-1 lead going into the second.
The Seawolves tied the game in the second quarter with one goal but the Sagehens answered with a goal by freshman Natalie Hill to give Pomona-Pitzer a 3-2 lead at the break.
Sonoma tied the game up in the third quarter and eventually took the lead as they scored two goals in the quarter. Senior Hope Grant scored a goal late in the quarter as the game came to a 4-4 tie heading into the fourth quarter.
The Seawolves grabbed the lead early in the fourth and Pomona-Pitzer came back to tie the game with a goal from McCracken with 5:33 left to play.
Sonoma went on to score two more goals late in the fourth quarter as they handed the Sagehens their second loss of the day.
The Sagehens continue their play in the Convergence Tournament as they take on Occidental on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and UC San Diego at 6:20 p.m.
