WHITTIER, Calif. – The Pomona-Pitzer women's water polo team lost their first Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game of the season at Whittier by the score of 14-9.
The Sagehens fell behind early as Whittier scored the first three goals of the game to jump out to a 3-0 lead. Pomona-Pitzer scored one goal in the first quarter as freshman Kyla Pickell found the back of the net but the Sagehens trailed the Poets 4-1 heading into the second quarter.
The Sagehens and Poets each scored two goals in the second as sophomore Morgan McCracken and freshman Natalie Hill scored their first goals of the game as Pomona-Pitzer went into halftime with a 6-3 deficit.
Whittier extended its lead in the third as the Poets tallied six goals in the quarter. Pomona-Pitzer only found the back of the net once as freshman Nohea Kahaulelio scored her first goal of the game as the Poets held a 12-4 lead going into the fourth.
The Sagehens tried desperately to get back into the game in the last quarter as sophomore Jocelyn Castro tallied a hat-trick in the period alone and Kahaulelio and freshman Samantha Martinez each chipped in with a goal each but it wasn't enough as the Poets held on for the win.
The Sagehens will next continue SCIAC play as they travel to Redlands on Saturday, April 2nd at 11:00 a.m.
