CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Pomona-Pitzer women's water polo team won an overtime sudden death thriller over Chapman 7-6 on Saturday afternoon at Haldeman Pool.
Freshman Anna Yu scored the sudden death goal for the Sagehens as they snapped a three-game losing streak with the win over the Panthers.
Pomona-Pitzer was led by junior Christina Williamson and sophomore Jocelyn Castro who each tallied two goals on the day.
Chapman started out on top as they scored the only goal in the first quarter to take an early 1-0 lead.
The Sagehens got their first goal of the game as Castro found the back of the net in the second quarter for the only goal of the half for Pomona-Pitzer.
The Panthers also scored a goal in the second quarter as they went into the half with a 2-1 lead. Chapman tacked on one more in the third quarter and held a 3-1 lead going into the fourth.
Chapman went on to add two more goals to their total in the fourth but Pomona-Pitzer found their offensive rhythm in the fourth quarter and tallied four goals coming from Castro, Williamson, senior Megan Snow and sophomore Morgan McCracken to send the game into overtime.
Neither team was able to score in the first overtime period and the Sagehens would take the lead in the second overtime as Williamson found the back of the net; however, the Panthers responded quickly and tied the game late in the second overtime period as the game went into sudden death where Yu scored the game-winning goal.
The Sagehens next host non-conference opponent Brown on Monday, March 28th at 4:00 p.m. at Haldeman Pool.
