Box Score Claremont, Calif. – The Pomona-Pitzer men's basketball team defeated top-ranked Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent Chapman 64-54 on Saturday night at Voelkel Gymnasium.
Pomona-Pitzer was led by freshman Daniel Rosenbaum who tallied a team-high 16 points and five rebounds. Senior Gibson Farone-Collins helped the Sagehens with 15 points and nine rebounds and sophomore Jack Gale chipped in with 12 points.
Chapman was led by Rob Nelsen who tallied a game-high 18 points for the Panthers in the loss.
The first half was a tight battle between the two teams with neither team able to pull away with a large lead.
The Panthers were able to cash in on a layup by James Taylor with 13 seconds left in the half and the Sagehens and Panthers went into the locker room tied at 28-28.
Pomona-Pitzer took an early lead coming out of the locker room as they connected on four straight shots to open up the half and took a 36-33 lead over the Panthers.
The Sagehens pulled away from the Panthers after a 15-2 run that was capped off by a Rosenbaum steal that ended on a fast break dunk to give Pomona-Pitzer a 56-49 lead with 3:09 to go.
The Panthers went cold down the stretch and were forced to foul to send the Sagehens to the line.
Pomona-Pitzer cashed in at the free throw line late in the game as they connected on eight-straight free throws to close out the game and claimed its fifth SCIAC win of the season.
Pomona-Pitzer next takes the court as they host Cal Lutheran on Wednesday, February 10th at 7:30 p.m.
