THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Pomona-Pitzer women's water polo team finished the Tina Finali Invitational with a 3-1 record after a 9-6 win over Cal State Monterey Bay and a 7-6 win over Santa Clara in day two.
Pomona-Pitzer jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first quarter against CSU Monterey Bay as sophomore Morgan McCracken found the net twice in the period. Junior goal keeper Ahsha Earwood shut out the Otters in the first period to help the Sagehens take an early lead.
The Sagehens had a big second period as they tallied five goals by five different players. Sophomore Jocelyn Castro, freshman Nohea Kahauelelio, junior Chessa Burke, freshman Natalie Hill and McCracken all tallied a goal in the period as the Sagehens went into halftime with a 7-2 lead.
The Otters outscored the Sagehens 3-2 in the third period to cut the lead down to 9-4 with Pomona-Pitzer goals coming from junior Hope Grant and Castro.
Pomona-Pitzer went scoreless in the fourth period but the Sagehens' defense was able to hold the lead and give Pomona-Pitzer a win in game one of their double header.
The Sagehens then took on Santa Clara in the final game of the Tina Finali Invitational.
Pomona-Pitzer took a slight 3-2 lead after the first as Grant, Kahauelelio and McCracken found the back of the net early.
McCracken added another one in the second and junior Christina Williamson notched her first goal of the day as the Sagehens went into the break with a 5-3 lead.
Pomona-Pitzer did not score a goal in the third and surrendered one to the Broncos as they cut the lead down to just one goal at 5-4.
Santa Clara scored another in the fourth but the Sagehens found the back of the net twice with goals from Castro and Hill as Pomona-Pitzer stayed perfect on the day.
The Sagehens will next hit the pool as they host the 2016 Convergence Tournament that will take place at Haldeman Pool on Friday, March 4th and Saturday, March 5th. Games will begin at 10 a.m.
