Box Score CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Pomona-Pitzer men's basketball team split the season series in the Sixth Street Rivalry to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps as they lost game two by the score of 51-49 on Monday night at Voelkel Gymnasium.
The Sagehens were led by senior Gibson Farone-Collins who tallied a game-high 19 points and 11 rebounds in the loss. Freshman Corbin Koch played in his first game since being injured earlier in the season and scored 15 points for Pomona-Pitzer.
The Stags were led by Nick Lund who scored a team-high 12 points coming off of the bench. Jack Early scored 11 points for CMS and Michael Scarlett had 10.
The Stags opened the game up on a 7-2 run as the Sagehens struggled to find the bottom of the net early in the first half. The Sagehens responded by scoring six-straight points to take the lead at 8-7 with just under 10 minutes left in the first half.
Both teams played hard defense in the first half as the offenses struggled to score points. CMS shot 34% in the first half and Pomona-Pitzer only converted on 32% of its shots from the floor.
The Stags took a slight edge going into the locker room after Evan Davis hit a late three-point shot to give CMS a 22-19 lead.
The second half was a tight back and forth battle as the lead changed hands several times and neither team was able to pull away.
The largest lead of the second half came as Scarlett hit a floater as time expired on the shot clock to give CMS a four point lead at 50-46 with just 21 seconds remaining.
After a pair of free throws from Koch, the Sagehens found themselves down two points and were forced to foul the Stags.
CMS went to the line and only hit one free throw to take a three-point lead giving the Sagehens a shot to send the game to overtime.
The Stags smartly fouled to not give Pomona-Pitzer an attempt to tie the game. The Stags eventually missed a free throw at the end of the game and Farone-Collins heaved a half-court shot but could not connect as the Stags took game two of the series.
The Sagehens next take the court as they travel to Occidental on Wednesday, February 17th at 7:30 p.m.
