Claremont, Calif. - The second-seeded Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis had little trouble in the first two rounds of the SCIAC Championship Tournament, defeating Whittier 5-0 in the quarterfinals and La Verne 9-0 in the semifinals.
The wins improve the Sagehens record to 14-5 on the season and sends them through to tomorrow morning's finals against CMS, the host and top seed, which advanced with wins over Occidental and Redlands.
The first match of the day was played until decision by SCIAC rules, and the Sagehens wasted little time in securing the victory and resting for the semifinals. After sweeping doubles, sophomore Maddie Gordon (pictured) earned a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles and freshman Emily Chen took a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5 to make the final score 5-0.
The Sagehens swept doubles again in the La Verne match, and earned a quick singles win at No. 4 as freshman Emily Kuo was ahead 5-0 when her opponent retired. Chen then picked up the clincher 6-0, 6-0 to finish off a day in which she won her two matches 24-1. Gordon won 6-0, 6-3 to stretch the lead to 6-0 after nearly making it through the day without losing a game.
The match was played to completion, and freshman Maryann Zhao recovered from dropping the first set 6-0 at No. 2 to win 0-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-2). Freshman Grace Hruska picked up a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 3 and freshman Shivani Doraiswami earned a win at No. 1 singles (6-1, 6-2) against Laina Matsuda, who had only lost one dual match to a Division III opponent all spring (against CMS).
The Sagehens will look to try to turn the tables against CMS, which won the first match during the regular season 6-3.
