Claremont, Calif. - Ten different players scored goals as the top-seeded Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team shook out of its recent offensive struggles with an 18-4 win over Occidental in the quarterfinals of the SCIAC Tournament on Friday at Haldeman Pool.
With the win, the Sagehens improve to 18-9 on the season and 9-0 in the SCIAC (the tournament counts towards each team's regular season record). Occidental slips to 1-8 in league play with the loss.
Senior Alyssa Woodward, sophomore Christina Williamson and freshman Morgan McCracken each had hat tricks with three goals apiece to lead a balanced offense (Williamson pictured scoring one of her goals).
Pomona-Pitzer won two defensive struggles to close out the regular season, 8-6 over CMS last Wednesday and 5-4 over Cal Lutheran on Saturday and started slowly against Occidental, finding itself tied 1-1 with just over a minute left in the first quarter. Williamson, though, tallied a goal at the 1:01 mark and freshman Erica Halaszynski had a steal and breakaway to give the Sagehens a 3-1 lead after the first stanza.
That quick spurt started a 9-0 run that carried into the second half, as Pomona-Pitzer built a 10-1 lead. The Sagehens scored all four goals in the second quarter, from four different players, to take a 7-1 lead at the break, and Woodward, senior Mahalia Prater-Fahey (two goals) and McCracken scored to start the second half and put the game out of reach.
Senior Sarah Westcott scored in the third quarter as well, giving her 199 goals in her four-year career, one shy of the 200 milestone. Seniors Vicky Gyorffy and Sallie Walecka, junior Megan Snow, and sophomores Hope Grant and Chessa Burke also had goals. Woodward added a save to go with her three goals as she played the final six minutes in goal in relief of Ahsha Earwood, who had four saves in 26 minutes before giving way.
Pomona-Pitzer will face Chapman on Saturday at 4 p.m. in one of two semifinals, after CMS and Whittier play the first one at 2:30. The two winners will play in the championship match on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
