Claremont, Calif. - Senior attacker Alyssa Woodward was named the SCIAC Female Athlete of the Week (all sports) for helping the Sagehens to a 3-0 week, it was announced by the conference office.
Woodward played in her final two regular season home matches at Haldeman Pool and scored a combined 11 goals. She had five in a narrow 14-10 win over Azusa Pacific on Wednesday in a game in which the Sagehens trailed in the third quarter before pulling away late. Then, after being honored on her Senior Day, she notched a new career high with six goals in a 15-5 win over La Verne to help Pomona-Pitzer stay undefeated in the SCIAC.
In addition to her big week, she also crossed an impressive career milestone by scoring the 300th goal of her career in the win over Azusa Pacific, which came on a penalty shot after she drew a foul inside of five meters in the second quarter. A three-time first-team Division III All-American, Woodward had 79 goals as a freshman, 88 as a sophomore, 86 as a junior and now has 55 this season for a career total of 308.
Woodward becomes the second member of the Women's Water Polo team to be honored by the SCIAC this spring. Sophomore goalie Ahsha Earwood earned the honor after helping the Sagehens to a 4-0 weekend at the Claremont Convergence Tournament on March 6-7, including the program's first-ever win over UC San Diego. Senior Vicky Gyorffy earned the honor in January while competing for the Women's Swimming and Diving team.
Woodward and the Sagehens (14-9, 6-0 SCIAC) close out the regular season with two road matches this week, including a battle of SCIAC unbeatens at 7-0 CMS on Wednesday (7 p.m.) and at Cal Lutheran on Saturday (11 a.m.).
