Claremont, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team scored the final five goals of the game, including all four in the fourth quarter, as it pulled away from Whittier for a 13-7 win on Wednesday evening at Haldeman Pool.
Senior Mahalia Prater-Fahey (pictured) led the way with four goals, one in each quarter, for the Sagehens, who improve to 11-9 overall and 3-0 in the SCIAC with the win. Whittier falls to 12-11 overall and 2-1 in conference play with the loss.
Freshman Morgan McCracken scored the final goal of the first half to give the Sagehens a 5-3 lead at the the break, and the two teams both came out on fire in the second half. Senior Alyssa Woodward scored two goals in the first 1:18 of the third quarter, but around back to back goals from Zyania Morales and Arlin De La Mora from the Poets. De La Mora then added her second with 5:56 left in the third to make the score 7-6.
After Hope Grant scored a transition goal at the 5:01 mark, Morales scored her second one minute later to bring the Poets within 8-7, giving the two teams a combined seven goals in the first four minutes of the second half.
Prater-Fahey answered back on the next Pomona-Pitzer possession, though, and Whittier would not score again. The Sagehens held the 9-7 lead going into the fourth, when junior Megan Snow scored as a 6 on 5 expired, and was followed by goals from Woodward, Prater-Fahey and sophomore Christina Williamson to make the final 13-7.
Ahsha Earwood had eight saves for Pomona-Pitzer, while Caitlin Bronzan also had eight for Whittier on the day.
The Sagehens are back in action on Saturday for another SCIAC home match against Redlands, beginning at 11 a.m.
