Claremont, Calif. - The No. 8 ranked Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis team got all of its points from its freshman class and it pulled out a narrow 5-4 win over No. 13 University of Chicago on Wednesday at Pauley Tennis Complex.
With the win, the Sagehens are now 7-3 on the season, while Chicago levels its record at 6-6 on the year with the loss.
Shivani Doraiswami (pictured) won at both singles and doubles, teaming with fellow freshman Emily Chen for an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles. That would be the only point the Sagehens would get in doubles as the Maroons earned tight wins at No. 1 (8-5) and No. 3 (8-6).
Pomona-Pitzer came out sharper in singles, though, with freshmen winning at the No. 2-5 spots to lead the comeback. Emily Kuo was the first to finish at No. 5, earning a quick 6-1, 6-1 win to tie the score at 2-2. After Chicago pulled ahead 3-2 with a win at No. 1 from Ariana Iranpour, Maryann Zhao and Doraiswami played simultaneous match points, with Zhao winning hers at No. 3 (6-3, 6-2) mere seconds before Doraiswami earned the win at No. 2 (6-1, 6-2) to give Pomona-Pitzer a 4-3 lead.
The final point proved to be hard to come by as freshman Grace Hruska (No. 4) and junior Marie Fleming (No. 6) both won first sets but fell in the second and had to go to a full three. Hruska got an early break for a 3-0 lead in the third and ended up pulling out a 6-2 win on her fifth match point to clinch the team win. The Maroons ended up with the win at No. 6 as Sruthi Ramaswami won 6-1 in the third.
Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action tomorrow when it takes on No. 16 MIT for a 4 p.m. contest at Pauley Tennis Complex.
