Thousand Oaks, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team split a pair of matches at the Tina Finali Invitational on Saturday, hosted by Cal Lutheran.
The Sagehens began the day with an 8-3 defeat to Cal State East Bay in a defensive struggle, and then bounced back to defeat Fresno Pacific 9-7 in the afternoon in their nightcap.
Senior Sarah Westcott (pictured) had two of the three Pomona-Pitzer goals against East Bay, which jumped out to a 4-0 lead at the end of the first quarter and maintained its lead throughout. Senior Chrissie Alving-Trinh added the other Pomona-Pitzer tally.
The Sagehens regrouped and earned a 9-7 win in the nightcap, extending a 6-3 lead at the half up to 8-3 by the end of three quarters, and then holding off a late Sunbirds rally to win 9-7. Fresno Pacific scored its sixth goal with 1:13 left and its seventh with six seconds on the clock to make the final score look closer.
Westcott had two goals in the nightcap as well, while senior Alyssa Woodward also added two. Senior Vicky Gyorffy, who won three SCIAC titles with the Pomona-Pitzer Swimming and Diving team last week and qualified for nationals next month, scored her first goal with the water polo team this spring, while senior Sallie Walecka, junior Megan Snow, sophomore Hope Grant and freshman Morgan McCracken added a goal apiece.
Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action next weekend when it co-hosts the annual Claremont Convergence with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Friday and Saturday.
