Claremont, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis team started four freshmen in its singles lineup, and all had strong debuts as the Sagehens cruised to a 9-0 win without dropping a set in their season opener on Friday at Pauley Tennis Complex.
Shivani Doraiswami (No. 2 singles), Maryann Zhao (No. 3 singles - pictured), Emily Chen (No. 4 singles) and Grace Hruska (No. 5 singles) all picked up straight set wins in their first collegiate dual match. Zhao had to battle to win hers in straight set, but won the second-set tiebreaker 7-3 for a 6-2, 7-6 win. Doraiswami won 6-2, 6-2, Chen earned a 6-0, 6-2 win and Hruska won 6-1, 6-2.
Junior Lea Lynn Yen took a 6-1, 6-1 decision at No. 1 singles, while sophomore Maddie Gordon earned a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 6. All three doubles lines were won 8-2 by the Sagehens with Yen and Hruska teaming at No. 1, Doraiswami and Chen earning the win at No. 2, and Zhao and Gordon earning the sweep at No. 3.
Pomona-Pitzer, which is ranked No. 9 nationally in the preseason ITA Division III poll, is back in action next Saturday when it travels to Caltech for another SCIAC match.
