CLAREMONT, Calif. – Sophie Lau and Drew Goldman each captured the ITA West Regional singles championship on Sunday, giving Pomona-Pitzer a historic sweep of the men's and women's singles titles for the first time since the 1990s.
Both Sagehens went undefeated throughout the three-day tournament, which was played in triple-digit temperatures. Across 10 combined matches, Lau and Goldman dropped just 42 games while neither player lost a set on the way to their respective championships.
Lau earned her way to the women's singles title with four straight-set victories. The No. 5 seed opened the tournament with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Kala Komanduri of Colorado College before defeating No. 4 seed Emily Gao of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 6-, 6-1, in the round of 16. In the quarterfinals, Lau defeated No. 2 seed Ananya Sriniketh of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 6-4, 6-2, before advancing to the championship match with a 6-2, 6-3 semifinal victory over No. 3 seed Maegan Deng of Redlands. Lau capped her run with a 6-2, 6-3 win over No. 1 seed Rebecca Kong of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in Sunday's final, securing the regional championship and a spot at the ITA Cup, the ITA's national championship event, which will take place Oct. 15-18 in Rome, Georgia.
Lau's championship marks the first time a Pomona-Pitzer women's player has reached the ITA West Regional singles final since 2024, when Angie Zhou defeated her teammate, doubles partner and current assistant coach Marissa Markey in the championship match. In 2021, Nina Ye captured the regional title with a championship-match victory over Zhou. Goldman's championship completed the historic sweep for the Sagehens, marking the first time since the 1990s that Pomona-Pitzer's men's and women's teams have produced the ITA West Regional singles champions in the same year. The Sagehens also have a recent history of success at the regional tournament. In 2021, Zhou and Markey won the women's doubles title, while Owen Kelley and Jansen Comadena captured the men's doubles championship.
Ishya Bhavsar and Grace Kersenbrock also reached the semifinals in doubles, before falling to Deng and Whelen of Redlands on Sunday morning.
