Redlands, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Water Polo team fell to two ranked teams on Sunday at the Inland Empire Classic, dropping a 21-5 decision to No. 1 Stanford and a 13-8 decision to Concordia (Irvine) at Redlands.
With the losses, the Sagehens fall to 0-6 on the season with three losses coming to teams in the top 10 in the nation (along with No. 5 Long Beach State and No. 7 UC Santa Barbara last weekend).
Sophomore James Baker had two goals against Stanford and now has eight goals in three career matches against teams when they were ranked No. 1 in the nation. A year ago, he scored four times against No. 1 USC in only his second week of collegiate competition, and then added two goals later in the year against No. 1 UCLA.
Freshman Mark Hallman (pictured) added a goal against Stanford and scored twice in the loss to Concordia. Sophomores Tommy Turner and Nic Lanker added goals against the top-ranked Cardinal, while senior Stephen Vint had three goals against Concordia.
Junior Phillip Clayman and freshman Bennett Royce added goals in the Concordia loss, when the Sagehens led 3-1 early in the match, but the Eagles used a 5-0 run to take control before leading 7-4 at the break.
Freshman Daniel Diemer had 10 saves in the second half against Stanford in relief of starter Ethan Caleb Prater-Fahey, who had six saves in the first half. Prater-Fahey added eight saves in the loss to the Eagles.
Yesterday, on the opening day of the Inland Empire Classic, Prater-Fahey scored a rare goal in a 17-10 loss to Air Force when his long outlet pass sailed over the head of Vint, who leaked out behind the defense, and the Air Force goalie, who came out of his net to try to break up the outlet. He also had 16 saves in the loss, as well as nine in a 10-9 loss to La Verne.
Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action next weekend at the NorCal Championships, hosted by Pacific.
