Whittier, Calif. - Alyssa Woodward (pictured) scored five goals as the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team pulled away early and took an 11-6 win over La Verne in the SCIAC quarterfinals on Friday at Whittier College.
The top-seeded Sagehens improve to 21-13 overall and 8-1 in SCIAC play and will advance to the semifinals tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. against Redlands, which defeated Cal Lutheran 11-10 on a goal in the closing seconds. The winner of that game will play in the SCIAC championship on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
Pomona-Pitzer will be trying to win its third straight league title after defeating Redlands in the finals in both 2012 (in sudden death overtime) and 2013.
Woodward scored the first two Pomona-Pitzer goals and Mahalia Prater-Fahey posted up to score another to give the Sagehens a 3-1 lead after the first quarter. Woodward scored two more goals in the second, sandwiched around a goal from Megan Snow, to stretch the lead to 6-1.
La Verne pulled to within 6-2 at halftime and scored the first goal of the second half to make the score 6-3, but Prater-Fahey and Christina Williamson scored the next two goals to push the Sagehen lead to 8-3. Chessa Burke and senior Brenda Iglesias, playing in her final SCIAC Tournament, added fourth quarter goals around the fifth from Woodward to make the final score 11-6.
Pomona-Pitzer has faced Redlands three times this year (twice in non-conference games in early-season tournaments) and won all three by one goal, including once in overtime.
